The Washington Balalaika Society launched the Children’s Music Academy in February of 2009 as part of its 20th Anniversary celebration. This is an exciting opportunity for all children, ages 7 to 14, to learn to play Russian folk instruments, such as the balalaika, domra, bayan, and related folk wind and percussion instruments. Rental instruments are available.
.
The classes are taught by WBS Conductor, Svetlana Nikonova, who is an honors graduate in arranging and conducting from the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St. Petersburg, Russia. Prior to coming to the United States, she arranged for the Andreyev Orchestra in St. Petersburg, one of the foremost orchestras of Russian folk instruments in the world. Svetlana is a music teacher and a virtuoso domrist, in her own right. Svetlana has a unique ability to work with children and bring out their individual abilities.
.
The academy meets once a week on Saturday afternoons. Every other week is devoted to individual lessons where the children are taught technique on their chosen instrument. They are also taught to read and write music, if they have had no prior instruction in reading music. On the the alternate week, the children learn to play together in an ensemble.
